If all the light is coming from <em>one<\/em> general location, basic physics dictates that any object placed between that light and your model will cast a &#8220;hard shadow&#8221; (an umbra and penumbra, for my fellow nerds).<\/p>\n<p>In miniature painting, our <em>tools<\/em> are the objects. Our <em>hands<\/em> are the objects. The <em>model&#8217;s own head<\/em> casts a shadow on its chest!<\/p>\n<p>We spend our entire painting session in a subconscious, frustrating battle against our own shadows. We&#8217;re constantly tilting the model, craning our necks, and &#8220;chasing the light&#8221; just to get a clear view. This constant adjustment is exhausting. It breaks our focus. And as we saw in the intro, it&#8217;s what causes those final, devastating mistakes. You can&#8217;t paint what you can&#8217;t see. And you can&#8217;t see what&#8217;s in a shadow.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Disaster_2_The_%E2%80%9CColor_Lie%E2%80%9D_of_Bad_Lighting\"><\/span>Disaster #2: The &#8220;Color Lie&#8221; of Bad Lighting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk about color temperature and CRI.<\/p>\n<p>Ever spend an evening painting the perfect, subtle, warm-red cloak? You&#8217;re proud. You put it on the shelf. You wake up the next morning, grab it, and in the bright, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/natural-daylight\">natural daylight<\/a> from your window&#8230; the cloak is <em>orange<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s your lamp lying to you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/seminglight.com\/es\/explorar-la-temperatura-de-color\/\">Color Temperature (Kelvin)<\/a>:<\/strong> Most indoor bulbs are &#8220;warm white&#8221; (around 2700K-3000K). This is a yellow, cozy light. It&#8217;s great for a living room, but it&#8217;s <em>terrible<\/em> for painting. It completely distorts your color perception. That cheap LED bulb in your lamp? It probably has a CRI of 80.
